L.G. 8/3/1918 ‘For services in action with enemy submarines’ Awarded for the ramming and sinking with all hands of the U-84 in the Irish Sea, 26/1/1918 whilst serving in the Q-Ship P.62 also known as ‘Mornington’ and ‘Kingsnake’. The U-84 was a modern submarine, well armed with a 4” gun and a 22-pdr. together with 12 torpedoes & 6 tubes and capable of a surface speed of 16 knots. She had been commanded throughout from launch by Walter Rohr who, in 8 distinguished patrols had sunk no less than 31 merchantmen plus H.M.S. Bergamot for a total 0f over 87,000 tons. She had further captured 2 merchant ships as prizes. Her luck ran out on the morning of 26 Jan. 1918 when she came upon the P.62 which had the benefit of being low lying with razor sharp bows ideal for ramming. She turned towards the U-84 and hit her at right angles close to the conning tower at a speed of 17 knots. The U-84 went upright and sank straight down in 200 feet with large quantities of oil coming up. As a final ‘make sure’ P62 dropped depth charges straight on top of her, The captain of P.62 was awarded the DSC whilst Thompson and one other rating were awarded the DSM. Excellent Q-Ship award
