1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medal, Bronze Memorial Plaque, 4-2844 Pte E.A. Smith, 1st/4th Bn Hampshire Regiment, Killed in Action in Mesopotamia on 2nd February 1917, later service number 200771

 

Edwin Alfred Smith from Winchester, joined the regiment at Hamilton Camp, Hants, he disembarked for service on 18th March 1915 when the regiment landed for service at Basra with the 33rd Indian Brigade.

 

The regiment spent the war in Mesopotamia and Persia fighting in the Relief of Kut-al-Amara, during which the Battalion HQ and Company were captured on 29th April 1916.
In one disastrous day during his service on 21st January 1916, the 1/4th were involved in an attempt to relieve Kut, costing 13 of 16 officers and 230 out of 339 other ranks to become casualties.

 

On 2nd February 1917, Pte Smith was Killed in Action and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
