1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medal, Lieut J.B. Gidley, North Staffordshire Regiment, an original officer of A Company 8th Bn who went to France in 1915.

 

Medals court mounted for wear on silk ribbons.

 

John Bartholomew Gidley was born during 1895, he first became an Officer in the London Gazette 20th November 1914, having graduated as a Cadet with the Officer Training Corps, being made Temporary 2nd Lieutenant as of 27th November 1914.

 

He set sail for war on board S.S. La Marguerite, with the 8th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment on 17th July 1915, one of 5 Officers and 1 Warrant Officer of “A” Company.

 

He was wounded in action on the fighting at the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, the 8th Battalion was in action at Albert on 1st July 1916, on the Tara-Usna Line, and were involved in fighting around Albert and La Boiselle, he was wounded in the epic fighting between 1st-5th July 1916, as the battalion fought tirelessly being picked off by enemy snipers, he became one of 12 Officer casualties of this action, 10 being wounded, including Commanding Officers of B, C and D Company, with 2 Officers being killed, including Major Wedgwood D.S.O., Commanding Officer of 8th Battalion, who was shot in the head by a Sniper.

 

Submitted to Hospital on 10th July 1916 from receiving a gunshot wound to the thigh on the Somme.

 

He appears to have been invalided home. Whilst in England he got married to Beatrice Stephanie Dixon Baker on 23rd January 1917 at Eggbuckland.

 

He died in Exeter, Devon during 1965.
