Served with the 1st 19th County of London Battalion (St Pancras), London Regiment from their first arrival into France on 10th March 1915 until 20th September 1916.

Later renumbered as 610500.

Award of the Military Medal announced in the London Gazette, 14th September 1916. Possibly an award for a recommendation from the period of the 19th Battalion’s involvement at Vimy Ridge between April to July 1916.

The 19th Londons saw extensive war service, during 1915 they fought at the Battle of Festubert from 24-27th May and the Battle of Loos, from 25th Sept – 1st October.
Ending the year with the Battle of Hohenzollern Redoubt, 13th-19th October.

During 1916 they were heavily engaged throughout the Battle of Vimy Ridge with the 47th Division involved in frequent crater-fighting in this sector from April to July 1916 including taking part in the Major German Attack on 21st May.

They went on to the Battle of the Somme at Flers-Courcelette from 15-19th September, taking heavy casualties at the Capture of High Wood on 15th September.

As his war service in France ended on 20th September 1916 he was likely invalided home from a wound on the Somme, he was awarded his Silver War Badge number 458259 which cites his invaliding being due to wounds making him unfit for further active service.
