Very few people named Sangwine fought in the war, less than 10 men earning medals.

Charles Sangwine first entered into the war on 4th December 1915 with 5th Battallion the Duke of Edinburgh’s Wiltshire Regiment, arriving in Gallipoli.

By January 1916 the battalion was evacuated during the withdrawal and shipped to Port Said.
In February they went to Kuwait and in March arrived in Amara via the Tigris River.
Once they arrived they relieved the Lahore Division South of Kut and during April 1916 took part in the attempt to relieve Kut and attacked the Turkish trenches at Hannah, followed by another attack on Sanna-I-Yat. However all the efforts failed and the garrison was forced to surrender.

Pte Sangwine is listed as having died from wounds on 15th May 1916, he is buried in the Amara War Cemetery in Iraq.
