1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medal, with Bronze Memorial Plaque, Stoker 1st Class George Richard Hobbs, Royal Navy, who died on 2nd August 1915.

 

George Richard Hobbs, was born in Plymouth, Devon on 19th November 1882, he had been a Fireman before he first joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 19th October 1903.

 

Before the war he served on a number of ships, the Hood (1904), Aeolus (1904), Barfleur (1905), Vengeance (1905), Europa (1908), Doris (1908), Sentinel (1908), Skirmisher (1909-10), Adventure (1910-11), Euryalus (1911), Prince George (1911-1912).

 

He had also quickly climbed the ranks of Stoker, becoming Stoker on 1st September 1904, Stoker 1st Class, 1st July 1906, Leading Stoker, 10th October 1907.

 

From 1912 until he was invalided he had been serving on HMS Roxburgh as a Stoker 1st Class from 4th June 1912.

 

At the time during June 1912 the Ship had just been transferred to the 3rd Cruiser Squadron of the 2nd Fleet, 6 months later she would standby the merchantman SS Ludgate off the coast of Morocco to protect the stranded ship.

 

During the War, the ship was mobilised with the Grand Fleet reinforcing patrols near the Shetland and Faeroe Islands and the Norwegian Coast. On 6th August 1914 she captured a German merchant ship.

 

On 9th February 1915 he was transferred to HMS Vivid II and discharged on 7th April 1915 to Plymouth Hospital, suffering from Neurasthenia.

 

He died there shortly afterwards on 2nd August 1915.
