Description

1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medal, 15486 Private George Henry Ridley, 8th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry, killed in action on the 1st Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916.

 

1915 Trio impressed: “15486 Pte G. H. Ridley Som. L.I.” All 3 on silk ribbons, with 2 original medal issue packets and a Somerset LI cap badge.
Memorial Plaque named: George Henry Ridley, in original cardboard box of issue with condolence slip and original addressed envelope for plaque.

 

One of the task for the 8th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry on the 1st July 1916, was to assist in the capture of Lozenge Alley and part of Lozenge Wood.

 

George Henry Ridley was born during April 1893 in Yorkshire, Guisborough to Thomas, a Policeman and Susan.. By the 1911 Census he and his family were living in Durham, where he was working as a Colliery Fitters Apprentice with his older brother.

 

He had attested at Durham for service in the war and arrived in France on 8th September 1915.

 

His death was announced in the Whitby Gazette 11th August 1916 with a photograph of him:

 

“THE FALLEN BRAVE

 

Information has been received that Pte G. H. Ridley, youngest son of Mr Thomas Ridley, Auton Stile, Durham, and grandson of the late Mr Jonathan Hammond, Engine Smith, Boghall, Whitby, was killed in action on 1st July.
Private Ridley was a member of the Somerset Light Infantry.
Private Ridley’s father was an Inspector in the North Riding Constabulary some years ago, and was stationed at Whitby.
