Afghanistan 1878-80, 2 bars, Ahmed Khel, Kandahar, Kabul to Kandahar Star, 2037 Private James Hopkins, 2nd 60th King’s Royal Rifle Corps.
One of the best condition pairs we have seen, very crisp condition.
Afghan officially engraved: “2037 Pte J. Hopkins, 2/60th Foot”
Kabul to Kandahar Star, officially embossed on reverse: “2037 Corpl Jas: Hopkins 2/60th Foot”
Confirmed on the medal roll, being present at the Battle of Ahmed Khel, followed by the famous Lord Roberts March from Kabul to Kandahar, culminating in the Battle of Kandahar that won the war.
The medals appear to have never been worn and well preserved.
The medal rolls initially believed him to have been Dead by the time of issue but this was then crossed through, the 60th Foot Discharges database hints that he was discharged according to WO25/3405.
James Hopkins, was born during 1851 in London, Middlesex.
Enlisted on 18th November 1870 aged about 18-19.
He was with the 4th Bn 60th Foot as of the 1871 Army Index, at this time he was at the HQ in Colchester, being on Attachment to the 4th Bn 60th Foot, from the 2nd 60th Foot.
In 1873 he first set sail for overseas service, when he embarked at Portsmouth on 28th January 1873 with the 2nd 60th Foot on the Euphrates for service in India.
