Alexander was a 92nd Gordons man since as early as 1871, being stationed with the regiment in Jullundur, India at that time.

He would see active service in the Afghanistan War, fighting at the Battle of Charasia on 6th October 1879, followed by earning the Kabul clasp for the operations around Kabul in December 1879, before taking part in the epic March to Kandahar, where he fought in the decisive Battle of Kandahar that ended the war.

Following the war, Alexander was later discharged on 30th December 1882, unusually choosing to buy his discharge “By Purchase”.
