Afghanistan 1878-80, bar Peiwar Kotal, 1483 Private S. Williams, 2nd Bn 8th (King’s Liverpool) Regiment. 

 

Officially engraved: “1483 Pte S. Williams. 2/8th Regt”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, for the medal and clasp.

 

At the time of issue he was still serving with the regiment.

 

The 8th Regiment aka the King’s or Liverpool Regiment had been in India for about a year when they were deployed to Afghanistan for the war.

 

The 2nd King’s were allocated to the Kurram Valley Field Force, under Major General Frederick Roberts.

 

They took part in the Battle of Peiwar Kotal on 2nd December 1878 in the Kurram Valley of Aghanistan.

 

The force only consisted of 2 British Regiments, the 2nd 8th King’s Regiment and a Half Battalion from the 72nd Highlanders.

 

They were fighting alongside a number of Indian Army regiments, in total about 889 Europeans with 2,415 Indians.
