Afghanistan Medal 1878-80, 3 bars, Charasia, Kabul, Kandahar, 58B/702 Pte. James Graham, 72nd Highlanders, a veteran of the Egypt War.

 

Officially engraved: “58B/702 Pte J. Graham. 72nd Highrs.” Some toning and contact marking from wear alongside his other medals.

 

James Graham was born in Canongate, Edinburgh, and had been in the Edinburgh County Militia when he attested for service with the 72nd Highlanders at Edinburgh, on 22nd June 1876, he was a 19 year old Cooper.

 

He proceeded to the East Indies on 26th December 1878 and would served there for 3 years 229 days including the full war in Afghanistan.

 

Having remained in the area, the regiment serving in India around Lucknow during 1880, following the war he was next posted to Egypt on 2nd August 1882, where he was engaged with the regiment at the Battle of Tell El Kebir (Tel-El-Kebir) on 13th September 1882.

 

He then returned home arriving on 1st November 1882 and served out the last 5 years 233 days of his service at home.

 

Additionally entitled to the Kabul to Kandahar Star, Egypt Medal bar Tel-el Kebir and a Khedive’s Star (1882).
