Gilbert Stanley Lipscombe Chappell was born during 1922 in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire, Wales.
He grew up in the The Rectory Brynoch in Penybont, where his father William Chappell was a “Rector Clerk in Holy Orders.”
His father the William was a Reverend who was a Rector of various churches around Wales during his life, the appropriately named “Reverend Chappell”.
Gilbert was a note athlete during his education, the Glamorgan Gazette 10th July 1936 reports:
“Gilbert Chappell, the son of the Rev William Chappell, Rector of St Brides Minor and Mrs Chappell, recently broke the high jump record at Christ’s College, Brecon. He is a prominent athlete in college sports.”
He married during 1950 to Dorothy H.B. Eames whilst in Tonbridge, Kent.
Gilbert first joined the Kenya Police on 1st November 1953 with the rank of Section Officer.
He advanced to Chief Officer on 1st July 1955.
By the time of the issue of the medal he was an Assistant Commandant.
After his time in Kenya he looks to have returned back home to Wales, he died there in Ogwr and was buried on 25th February 1985 in Nolton, Glamorganshire.
