Known as the Kenya or Mau Mau Uprising, during the war the 1st KOYLI arrived at Mombasa following a two week voyage on HMT Georgic on 26th November 1954, then boarding a train for a lengthy 36 hour journey over to Nanyuki, to link up with their advance parties.

The KOYLI would replace the Devons and would remain in Kenya until about October 1955.
