Description

Africa General Service Medal, EVII, bar Nandi 1905-06, 253 Private Mtikawele 1st Battalion King’s Africa Rifles.

 

Mtikawele was the son of Mtolela, a member of the Yao Tribe in Mbatamila, Liwonde, under Chief Kungwalo.

 

He was 22, standing 5 foot 8 inches tall on 22nd July 1914 when he enlisted for service with the 1st Battalion King’s African Rifles at Zomba.

 

He was charged by Regimental Court Martial on 10th June 1905 for 1. Drunkenness on duty and 2. Allowing a prisoner to escape whom it was his duty go guard, he spent 84 days on hard labour.

 

On 24th March 1906 at Nandi, he was sentenced to 20 lashes for being absent from fatigues at 2pm and not following orders.

 

Following the campaign in Nandi, he was discharged having served for 2 years 1 month on 31st August 1906 at Zomba.
