Description
Arctic Medal 1818-1855, instituted 1857, for Arctic Discoveries in the “Polar” Region, unnamed as issued.
Suspension refitted to medal.
The unique design of the medal led to some durability issues once they began to be worn by the recipients, the delicate multi piece suspension typically needing to be repaired at some point.
About 2500 men are believed to be entitled to the medal, with only about 1500 believed to have been issued to them.
One of the more unusual and beautiful medal designs made by Leonard Charles Wyon, shortly after taking over from his father William Wyon.
