Description
Arctic Medal 1818-1855, For Arctic Discoveries, unnamed as issued, an original medal for services in the Arctic and Polar regions.
Only about 1,486 medals are recorded as having been issued for this rare medal.
Originally about 2500 men were supposed to be entitled to the medal, but only about 1486 would claim them by the time of issue.
The medal was awarded for the various Arctic Expeditions spanning from 1818 to 1855 when the medal was instituted, as well as the 1857-59 McClintock Expedition searching for the missing Franklin Expedition which was finally located about 159 or so years later in 2016.
