Description

Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, GVI, bar Southern Rhodesia, 60 Sergeant Major James Reuben Beningfield, Southern Rhodesia Army, a rare short lived issue of this award.

Officially re-impressed naming: “60 S/M James R. Beningfield.”
Appears to have been sent back to the mint to be corrected, due to common misspelling of his name, even his death register had him down as Benningfield, which was later crossed out and corrected.

James Reuben Beningfield was born in Natal on 11th April 1906. He was the son of Frederick Samuel Beningfield an Auctioneer in Ixopo, Natal.

He died at Bulawayo General Hospital on 8th December 1963, his occupation shown as “Pensioner, Southern Rhodesia Army”.

The Beningfield Family has been in South Africa and Rhodesia since 1830 when Samuel Beningfield first settled there. The family later became well known as pioneers in Rhodesia.

Like James, many of the family also carry the name Reuben, named after his Uncle, the esteemed Lt Colonel Reuben Widdows Beningfield, Zulu War Veteran, Auctioneer and famous Big Game Hunter.
