Description

Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, EDVII, 68893 Sergeant William Carter, Royal Horse Artillery.

A long serving N.C.O. of the Royal Horse Artillery, due to an accident on duty, where his left hand was crushed damaging most of his fingers during 1903 at Bulford Camp, he was later discharged at the age of 39 holding the rank of Acting Sergeant Major during 1909.

William Carter was born during 1870 in Werneth, Cheshire.

He had enlisted at the age of 18 on 2nd October 1888 at Manchester to join the R.H.A. having worked as a Hatter.

At the time of his injury his papers note “The disability is of a serious nature and will in all probability interfere with his future efficiency as a soldier.”

He would continue his service as long as possible for another 6 years until he completed his 21 years of service and was recommended to instead be discharged for 21 years term instead of a Medical discharge even though his left hand was left “practically useless”.
