Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, VR issue, 6699 Driver William Megrapher, Royal Horse Artillery.
Officially engraved: “6699 Dvr. W. Megrapher. R.H.A.”
With copy service papers.
This medal was awarded in Adjutant Generals List 411 dated 1st July 1895.
William Megrapher was born during 1854 in Preston, Lancashire.
William served a remarkably long time in the Army, finally taking his discharge on 15th October 1905 aged 52 years old, after giving 3 months notice, following 33 years service in the Army.
His service was said to be “Exemplary”.
William first attested for service at Preston, on 9th December 1872.
He saw the following service:
Home, 10th December 1872 – 6th December 1880
India, 7th December 1880 – 5th January 1885
Home, 6th January 1885 – 15th October 1905.
Having spent a large chunk of his life in the Army, he died not long after a long deserved retirement in Kent on 22nd March 1910.
His wife left the following notice in the local Kentish Independent on the 1st Anniversary of his death, 17th March 1911:
“MEGRAPHER – In loving memory of William Megrapher, the beloved husband of Hannah Megrapher, who departed this life on the 22nd March 1910, in his 59th year, at Shrubbery Cottage, Shooter’s Hill.
‘Sleep on, dear husband, thy labour is over,
Thy willing hands will toil no more;
A loving husband true and kind,
No friend on earth like thee i find;
They work is done, thy troubles are over,
Peace is thine now and for evermore’ – Rest in Peace.”
