Army Meritorious Service Medal, GV, 49504 2nd Corporal R.S. Gargett, 210th Field Company, Royal Engineers.

 

With attributed portrait photo in his great coat.

 

Ralph Sidney Gargett was born during July 1894 in Sunderland, Durham. He later died in Brighton, Sussex, during March 1969.

 

M.S.M. announced in the London Gazette 17th June 1918 ‘In recognition of valuable services rendered with the Forces in France during the present war.’

 

Also entitled to the 1914-15 Star Trio, for service since 20th July 1915 until 4th March 1919 when discharged as class (Z).

 

The 210th Field Company was raised in Leeds and arrived for service in Egypt during Late 1915 before shipping off to France, landing at Marseilles on 6th March 1916, joining the 31st Division seeing their first battle on the bloody 1st Day of the Somme during the Battle of Albert from 1st July 1916, followed by earning Battle Honours for the Battle of Ancre, Arras for the 3rd Battle of Scrape, Oppy, St Quentin, Bapaume, Arras, Estaires, Hazebrouck, the Defence of Nieppe Forest, Ypres, Le Becque, Capture of Vieux Berquin, Ypres, Tieghem, Halluin South of Menin, the Bridging of the River Shelde with their final battle at Renaix on 11th November 1918.
