During the Anglo Ashanti War of 1900, the 2nd Bn Central Africa Regiment earned the medal without clasp, being under command of Captain H.E.J. Brake DSO at the time.

The unit was lead by 9 British Captains, who had with them 1 British Sergeant Major, the unit additionally had with them 11 Sikhs who were placed on attachment, at the time it was believed even though the Sikhs spoke a completely different language they could help command the local “Africans” of the regiment.

The medal roll notes that at the time of the issue of the medal during 1902 the men including Cheriwani were still stationed in “British Central Africa.”

Following the end of the war, the Central Africa Regiment, East Africa Rifles and the Uganda rifles were all amalgamated to become part of the King’s African Rifles, most men like Cheriwani became part of the 2nd (Nyasaland) Battalion.
