Ashanti 1900, no bar, Dr: J.C. Castor, A.F.F.

 

Dr Castor was a Dr with the African Field Force before he died on service at Kwisa only two days march from Kumassi on 4th January 1901.

 

Josiah Charles Castor first joined the Medical Register on 25th January 1881 base out of 39, Rossiter Road, Balham, London S.W., having become Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon at the Royal College of Edinburgh during 1880.

 

He began to travel around Africa during the mid 1890s, during his time attached to the army he was Appointed Assistant Medical Officer at Tarkwa Railway on 27th May 1899. He was attached to the Ashanti Field Force on Special Service on the occasion of the campaign to capture Kumassi. He died at Kwisa on 4th January 1901, only two days march from Kumassi.

 


Provenance: Ex Collection of W.M. Knott Fayle, Esq J.P. or Birr, King’s County, sold by Sotheby’s on 12th May 1921.
It then became for many years part of the Medical Medals collection of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, noted in their collection in the Journal of 1960. (Ella N. Wade Supplemental Catalogue of Medical Medals, Badges and Coins, Transactions & studies of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia 1960 page 174) they note also that “This is rather rare as very few caucasions were in the force.”
