Badge of the Certificate of Honour, EIIR, Bronze, for the Nyasaland Protectorate, Impressive Large Size measuring 68mm x 50mm.
On original piece of watered silk ribbon.
The British Protectorate of Nyasaland existed from 1907 until 1953, becoming part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, later gaining Independence from the British Empire entirely in 1964 to become Malawi.
This unusual and impressive large Bronze Badge was instituted in the early 1920s and awarded in this style of African countries part of the British Empire.
The recipient would be awarded this Badge and an illuminated “Certificate of Honour”, it was intended to be awarded to local Chiefs and other “Non-Europeans” for distinguished service to the Protectorate Government, distinguished Public Service and Long and Faithful service to various Officials such as Chiefs, Headmen, Interpreters, Police etc.
With the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II during 1953, the medal received its 3rd effigy, that of Queen EIIR, however around this same time, the Protectorate would join part of the Central African Federation (CAF) aka the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
Additionally circa 1954, a smaller and rather less impressive breast badge was introduced, recipients could choose between which one they would receive.
