Baltic Medal, neat and well executed contemporary engraving: “Wm Hy Johnson. Sergt. H.M.S. Edinburgh”, A Royal Marine since 14, grew up in the Royal Marines Barracks since a child.

 

On old silk ribbon, slightly frayed.

 

William Henry Johnson is shown on the medal roll for HMS Edinburgh, as a Sergeant in the Royal Marines. The medal is shown as delivered to the Headquarters in Gosport on 4th April 1857.

 

Born in 1833 in Portsmouth, by the 1841 Census aged only 8 and was living at the Royal Marines Barracks in Portsmouth.

 

By 1847 he officially enlisted with the Royal Marines at the age of 14 as a Drummer Boy.

 

By 1851 he was still a young Drummer Boy.

 

Already a Sergeant by the age of 22 when he served in the Baltic Campaign.

 

At the young age of 27, he died in Dorset whilst a serving Sergeant of Plymouth Division on 15th July 1860. He is buried in 3C18 Wimborne Cemetery.
