Baltic Medal, 1854-1855, contemporarily engraved with laurel leaves on each side of naming: “H. Cosby. Serjt R.M.A.”

 

Awarded the medal for service on HMS Basilisk as a Corporal, given to him at Gosport on 15th May 1857.

 

Henry Cosby was from Yeovil, Somerset, Born to William and Ann Cosby on 26th November 1820. He enlisted for service with the Royal Marines at Yeovil on 27th February 1841, by Capt Bunce. He had previously worked as a Glove Cutter.

 

Transferred to the Royal Marines Artillery around 1845.

 

Shown on the 1861 Cencus as a Sergeant in the R.M.A. living at Cumberland Terrace, Portsea, Portsmouth, with his wife Millicent Cosby and 4 Children.

 

Discharged due to length of service after 21 years during 1862.

 

By 1871 he had as a Pensioner, moved to Guernsey, and in the 1871 census was shown living at St Peters Terrace, St Martin, Guernsey, Channel Islands.
By 1881 he was aged 60 living at Rue Du Pre Mr Tardif Cottage, St Peter Port, Guernsey.

 

His death is recorded in the Guernsey Magazine, 1888.

 

“Cosby – On the 6th of January, at his residence, Ruettes Brayes, Henry Cosby, late Sergeant, Royal Marine Artillery, aged 67 years and 1 month,”
