Baltic Medal 1854-1855, contemporarily engraved to Wm Whalebone HMS Amphion.
This man is confirmed on the roll for HMS Amphion, his name spelt “Wm Wailbone” as Leading Stoker during the campaign, the remarks showing his medal was sent to HMS Fisgard 25th March 1857.
Birth records show no “Wailbone” born in England. William Henry Whalbone was born during 1823 in Sheerness, Kent and died there on 6th June 1897, his father was John Whalebone, Shipwright
Shown on the 1891 Census as a Widower and Retired Stoker aged 68, living with his son also named William Henry Whalebone born 1875, a Wheelwirht Apprentice, John R. Whalebone and Shipwright Apprentice at Hare Street, Sheerness, Kent.
His young son William Henry Whalebone, only 2 years into service with the Royal Navy died within a few months of his father, aged only 23.
