Bolton and District Humane Society Medal, Bronze, 51mm Large General Medal, awarded to G.S.J. Faulkner, 8th August 1904, for saving a boys life. One of only 48 ever issued.

 

Engraved on the back: “Awarded To G.S.J. Faulkner Augst 8th 1904”

 

This award was established in Bolton during 1895, being awarded for local acts of lifesaving in Bolton and nearby towns, between 1895 and 1911, only 19 medals were issued in Silver and 48 in Bronze.

 

A smaller version of the medal is more commonly seen for the Hulton Colliery Disaster during 1910 of which about 165 were issued.

 

This is the first named Bronze general medal we have offered or seen for sale.

 

Bolton Evening News, 22nd October 1904:

 

“Bolton is prominent in the list of awards of persons to receive testimonials from the Royal Humane Society for bravery in saving life from drowning. The local awards are:-….George S. J. Faulkner, Farnworth, for jumping into 12 feet of water in an old clay pit at Kearsley on August 8th and rescuing a boy.”

 

He was presented with his medal at Bolton Town Hall, the event being mentioned in the Bolton Evening News, 23rd December 1904:

 

“HUMAN SOCIETY, BRAVE DEEDS RECOGNISED

 

Considerable interest attached to the annual gathering of the Bolton and District Humane Society, which was held last night in the Mayor’s dining room at the Town Hall.
There was presented a much larger number than usual of awards fro the Royal Humane Society, consisting of Bronze medals and Certificates granted by the Bolton H.S.
There was a satisfactory attendance, making allowance for the depressing fog.
Coucillor R Waddington JP presides, and he was supported by Col G Hesketh VD JP, Mr T Fawell and Mr F. Lomax

 

…Royal Society Testimonial and Local Society’s Bronze Medal to G.S.J Faulkner and W. Liptrot.”

 

George Samuel John Faulkner was born in Great Broughton, Cheshire, during 1862.
He moved to Farnworth in Bolton to work as an Insurance Agent, marrying Margaret there in 1895.

 

He died in Bolton during 1925.
