Description
Boy Scouts Gallantry Cross, Bronze, 1st Class, 3rd Issue 1927-67, by Collins of London.
The Boy Scouts Gallantry Cross is awarded in 3 grades, 3rd Class in Gilt “The Gilt Cross”, 2nd Class in Silver “The Silver Cross” and 1st Class in Bronze, “The Bronze Cross”.
This is an original unnamed example, being a 3rd issue example dating to between 1927-1967 production, featuring the makers mark on the reverse of the official manufacturer, “Collins London”.
The 1st Class aka the Bronze Cross is the highest honour that can be earned by a Boy Scout, it was often called the “Scouts V.C.”, taking inspiration from the Victoria Cross with its design, material and ribbon, which is also made from Bronze, in the way the Military would rank the Bronze Victoria Cross over a Silver Military Cross.
The criteria for the Bronze Cross reads: “The highest possible award for gallantry, granted only for special heroism or extraordinary risk.”
