Description
British North Borneo Company Medal 1898-1900, bar Tambunan, Silver, edge stamped “Copy”, a good quality copy by the original maker.
The original issues of these medals were produced by Spink on behalf of the British North Borneo Company circa 1900, they later restruck the medals for sale to collectors, to distinguish them the S in “Son” of the below bust designers credit is struck out “Spink & *on Ltd”
Known also as the “Tambunan Expedition Medal”, this medal was awarded to veterans of the British North Borneo Company, particularly the British North Borneo Constabulary for service in North Borneo as part of the Punitive Expedition into the Tambunan Valley in Tambunan District, taking action against Mat Salleh to crush the Mat Salleh Rebellion. Mat Salleh was killed during the expedition, seen as a hero by some fighting foreign rule and an opportunist by others for his attempt to regain power in the expedition, the town of Tambunan still exists in Malaysia.
