British War Medal, Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, VR, W.T.F. Read, Boatman with H.M. Coastguard and Stoker Petty Officer.

 

William Thomas Frederick Read was born on 18th September 1862 in Cobham, Kent.

 

He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on HMS Pembroke, 23rd July 1881. He progressed to Leading Stoker by 1st December 1887 on HMS Hotspur, before joining the New Brighton Coast Guard as a Boatman on 27th June 1889, with whom he earned his L.S.andG.C. medal with on 5th August 1892.
He next joined the Holyhead Coast Guard on 10th April 1894 as a Commissioned Boatman.
He transferred to the Amlwch Coast Guard in Wales from 3rd June 1894 to 18th April 1895, finishing his career with the Bangor Coast Guard from 19th April 1895 to 17th September 1901.

 

After his discharge he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve and was recalled for service at the age of 52 on 2nd August 1914 as a Stoker Petty Officer at HMS Pembroke II.
He would then serve on HMS Actaeon from 18th August 1915 until 16th January 1919.
Actaeon was originally the Screw Frigate Ariadne built in 1859 which was hulked to become a Torpedo School at Sheerness and renamed Actaeon in 1905.
The establishment was used as an Auxiliary First World War Patrol Base during WW1.
As he only saw home service the British War Medal is his only entitlement.
