British War Medal & Victory Medal, Bronze Memorial Plaque, 24982 Pte. J. Williams, S. Lan. R.

John Williams was killed in action on 10th August 1916 aged 21, serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, he is commemorated on the Pier and Face 7A & 7B on the Thiepval Memorial.

John Williams was born during 1895 in St Helens, Lancashire, he was living at 5 Ada Street, Peasley Cross, St Helens, when he attested for service in his local regiment the Prince of Wales Volunteers, The South Lancashire Regiment, on 15th December 1915.

He arrived in France at Rouen joining he 3rd Infantry Base Depot on 26th June 1916.
On 5th July 1916 he proceeded to the Front with 1/4th Battalion S. Lancs.
Only a month after arriving at the Front he was declared Killed in Action on 10th August 1916.

He was one of 338 fatal casualties suffered by the 2nd Battalion during the Battle of the Somme between July & October 1916, around the time he was killed between late July and early August the battalion was in the front line opposite Beaumont-Hamel
