British War Medal & Victory Medal, 2nd Lieutenant Bernard John McCutcheon, 48 Squadron, Royal Air Force, killed in action when shot down over Foucaucourt during the Battle of Amiens on 8th August 1918.

 

Both medals officially impressed as issued by air ministry: “2. Lieut. B. J. McCutcheon. R.A.F.”

 

Born in 1898 in Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex, he first joined the war with the 14th London Regiment, before being commissioned into the R.F.C. on 10th October 1917.

 

On 8th August 1918, he was flying operationally as Pilot of Bristol Fighter F2B D.8061, with 48 Squadron, 22 Wing, along with his Observer 2/Lt V.S. Gray.

 

They were tasked with a low altitude observation patrol over Lamotte, they took off at 9-05am and were not heard of again, the plane was seen going down, diving over Foucaucourt, east of the British Lines, on this day the German Fighter Pilots were particularly tenacious some logging 10 hours flown and the RAF had taken some of it’s worst losses in one day, losing 45 planes.
