British War Medal, Bronze, 13149 Pte Daniel Hanyani, Basutoland Contingent, South African Native Labour Corps. 

 

Good preserved condition and no bruising or edge knocks.

 

Officially impressed: “13149 Pte Daniel Hanyani S.A.N.L.C.”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll.

 

Shown on the medal roll of the Basutoland Contingent of the SANLC, which records that he attested for service at Johannesburg on 16th March 1917 and was discharged on 30th June 1918.

 

It also confirms that he did see service “O/S” Overseas.

 

Daniel Hanyani came from the British Protectorate of Basutoland, now known as Lesotho, this was one of the 3 British Protectorates that recruits men from the region for service in the SANLC.

 

Many of the men came from inside the newly independent Union of South Africa, however these men were disqualified from the medal, due to racially motivated. This left the British to issue the Bronze medal only to those men who came from the 3 British Protectorates, Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland.
