Lancashire Evening News, 24th March 1942:

 

“MR WJ FERRINS DEAD

 

The death took place yesterday at his home, Linden, Pedder’s Lane, Ashton on Ribble, Preston, of Mr William John Ferrins, retired Officer in H.M. Customs.

 

Mr Ferrins came from Macduff, Banffshire in 1908 as Chief Customs Officer at Preston Dock.
He held the Naval Rank of Paymaster Lieutenant-Commander.

 

Retiring at the end of the last war, he interested himself in the Royal Fleet reserve and was for a time Commanding Officer of the Preston Sea Cadets.

 

At the time of his death Mr Ferrins was a Sub Commissioner of Pilotage for the Port of Preston.
He was a member of Ashton Methodist Church.
He is survived by his only son, Mrs Ferrins died a few years ago.”

RNR Decoration announced 4th July 1916 as Paymaster.

 

William John Ferrins was born back in 1857, in Hampshire.

 

His job would take him around the country, and as long time officer of Her Majesty’s Customs, he would be posted to various docks and Customs Houses.

 

He was first appointed as an Honorary Assistant Paymaster with the Royal Naval Reserve on 26th August 1893.

 

Promoted to Honorary Paymaster on 7th March 1901
