Campaign Service Medal, bar Malay Peninsula, Captain M. Hayward-Butts, R.N. Naval Advisor to the British High Commissioner and R.N. Liason Officer in Canberra, Australia 1966-9.

 

Rare C.S.M. to a Captain.

 

Born on 19th December 1921 to T. Hayward-Butt of Sussex in Randfontein, South Africa.

 

He was educated at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and first served in Destroyers from 1939-57, before becoming Assistant Naval Adviser to British High Commissioner in Australia from 1957-9, with some time with the Fleet Work Study Organisation.
He was also an A.M.B.I.M. Associate Member of the British Institute of Management & F.I.W.S.P., Fellow of the Institute of Work Study Practitioners.

 

He was extensive sea service during WW2, first commissioned as a Midshipman on 01/09/1939 just in time for the war, joining the crew of HMS Enterprise, a Cruiser from 26/08/1939 until February 1941.
He then joined HMS Wanderer (Destroyer) from 10/10/1941 until February 1943.
Then HMS Inconstant for the remainder of the war from June 1943 to December 1943, and again from April 1944 to July 1945.
On 29th May 1945 he was made First Lieutenant of the Sloop HMS Actaeon until October 1947.

 

His promotions: Midshipman: 01/09/1939, Sub Lieut: 01/09/1941, Lieut: 16/03/1943, Lieut Commander 16/03/1951, Commander 11/12/1955, Captain 30/06/1964, until retirement as Captain on 02/09/1969 as Medically Unfit, having just left his role as Naval Advisor

 

The Canberra Times 26th March 1969:
“Tomorrow the High Commissioner will give a dinner to farewell Captain M. Hayward-Butt, R.N., Naval Adviser to the High Commission, and Mrs Hayward-Butt, who are leaving Canberra.”

 

He died during March 1991 in Oxford, Oxfordshire.
