China 1900, bar Relief of Pekin, J. Barrett, P.O. 2nd Class, HMS Terrible, Wounded in action at Tientsin on 9th July 1900, his arm blown off by a Chinese 75mm Krupp Cannon, died on his passage home on 31st October 1900.

 

Born on 19th May 1872 in Liverpool, Lancaster.
Enlisted for service at the age of 18 at Portsmouth, served aboard HMS Impregnable as a Boy 2nd Class and then HMS Invincible, leaving as an Ordinary Seamen and joining HMS Terrible on 24th march 1898.

 

He had been sent to South Africa, serving in the Boer War with Wilde’s 12 Pounder Gun Unit, as part of the Naval Brigade, taking part in the Relief of Ladysmith.

 

He was then sent to China, serving with the Naval Brigade again as part of a 12 Pounder Gun Unit.

 

The Naval Brigade was heavily involved in numerous battles throughout June & July 1900, including some epic actions against the Chinese, resulting in many casualties.

 

“On July 8th the Battery was heavily engaged and its position was only tenable because of well prepared gun-pits and earth-bag barricades. A Chinese Gun found the range and able seamen Barrett had his right arm shot off.
