Description
Civil Defence Medal, complete example mounted for wear in original Royal Mint box with issue letter from the Secretary of State for Scotland.
Established in 1961, the C.D.M. is a long service medal awarded for 15 years of continuous service in various organisations including the Civil Defence Corps, the Auxiliary Fire Service, The National Hospital Service Reserve and the United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisations.
It was also soon after extended in 1963 to cover personnel in Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Malta.
The medal is still technically active, although most of the organisations have since been disbanded, the final remaining one being the Civil Defence volunteers on the Isle of Man.
