Description

Colonial Police Forces Long Service & Good Conduct, EIIR, 1490 Sub Inspector Chingwalu, Nyasaland Police.

Officially impressed: “1490 Sub-Insp Chingwalu, Nyasaland.”

This medal was earned for 18 years of full time, continuous and efficient service in the Police Force of any British Colony.

Nyasaland gained there independence from Britain during 1964 to become Malawi, leaving only about 10 years for the EIIR example of this medal to be issued.

Sub Inspector Chingwalu would have served around the period of “Operation Sunrise” a controversial Police and Military action during 1959 against the Nyasaland African Congress, this led to the Foreign Office’s “Devlin Commission” declaring that Nyasaland was at the time a “Police State” using excessive force to maintain control of the country, just 5 years later they gained Independence.
