Description
Crimea Medal 1854-6, 3 bars, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol, Private George Pretty, 38th (South Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot.
Officially impressed: “G. Pretty. 38th Regt”
The medal is highly unusual, as his service in Crimea was primarily with the 17th Foot, his original regiment, before he transferred to the 38th Regt in December 1855.
Also fought through the Indian Mutiny with the regiment, earning the Indian Mutiny Medal with clasp Lucknow.

George Pretty was born in Allington, Salisbury, Wiltshire.
He first enlisted for service with the 17th (Leicester) Regiment at Salisbury on 22nd February 1854, when only 17 year and 6 months old with the rank of “Lad”.
He became of age on 22nd August 1854, and transferred to the 38th Foot on 1st December 1855.
Following his service through the Mutiny, he was later discharged on 28th November 1864.
