Description

Distinguished Service Order, Gold, Queen Victoria 1st Issue, without top bar, body and suspension bar made from gold.

 

When the Distinguished Service Order was first instituted by Queen Victoria and announced in the London Gazette of 9th November 1886, they were originally made entirely from enamelled gold.

 

A small number were awarded as such until 1889, the last year they were made from Gold, when it was decided that they would instead be made from Silver Gilt, during these brief years only approximately 153 awards were made.

 

The breakdown of the issues are as below, as collated in British Gallantry Awards by Abbott and Tamplin:

 

1886: 42 Issues, 12 for Burma and 30 for Egypt (Ginnis)
1887: 67 Issues, 64 for Burma (6 to Royal Navy), 3 for Soudan (2 for Sarras)
1888: 13 Issues, 10 for Burma and 3 for West Africa (1 to Royal Navy)
1889: 30 issues, 10 for Burma, 8 for Egypt (Toski), 8 for Hazara, 2 for Sikkim and 2 for West Africa.
