Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1914-15 Star Trio, Territorial Efficiency Medal, 286 Warrant Officer 2nd Class C. Taylor, 1/5th Bty 1/1st East Lancs Brigade R.F.A.

Award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal, announced in London Gazette 15th September 1915:

“For conspicuous gallantry and ability south of Krithia, Gallipoli Peininsula, on 4th and 28th June, and 12th and 13th July, 1915.
Corporal Taylor and another non commissioned officer were employed with guns dug in close behind the forward trenches and exposed to heavy shell and rifle fire, but kept their guns continually in action in spite of great difficulties.”

An expansion from the local Burnley Express, 18th September 1915:

“… of Cock Bridge, Great Harwood, Corporal C. Taylor has been in the Brigade for some years, and went to Egypt, last September. Since going to the Dardanelles he has been wounded, but not severely enough to be kept out of action. In peace times he was an engineer at Moorfield Colliery.”

Commended for his bravery on 4 separate occasions, the 4th June 1915, being the 1st Day of the Third Battle of Krithia, the 28th June 1915 was the Battle of Gully Ravine.
The 12th and 13th July were “one of the darkest days in the history of the Scottish Borderers”, during an an attempted attack to breakthrough at Helles, the Lowland Brigade, suffered almost 1000 casualties to the men of the K.O.S.B.

During this period the men of the Royal Field Artillery were overworked and outgunned, leading into the 3rd Battle of Krithia, the “Artillery situation at Helles, as at Anzac Cove, remained perilous, the British had only 78 guns and howitzers and were still short of ammunition. When the battleship HMS Triumph was sunk on 25th May and another Battleship, HMS Majestic, sunk on 27th May by Torpedoes, the situation worsened as naval gunfire support was reduced.”

With a very well made set of period die struck matching miniatures mounted for wear.
