“During the continuous and heavy fighting in the withdrawal from Gouzeaucourt to Dernancourt, on the Somme, from 21st to 28th March, and around Wytschaete from 10th to 26th April, 1918, he displayed marked courage and initiative in getting rations and water delivered to the battalion each night, invariably under heavy harassing artillery and machine gun fire. The tireless energy shown by him throughout these periods contributed not a little to the efficiency of the battalion as a fighting unit
