Description

Distinguished Flying Cross, dated 1944, 1939-45, Star, Aircrew Europe Star, with France And Germany Clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal, Flight Lieuteant A.G. Petitt, Pathfinder Force 8 Group, 405 Squadron, R.C.A.F.

 

Medals court mounted for wear.
D.F.C. neatly engraved on reverse “F/Lt A.G. Pettitt.”
With recipients ribbon bar & original Pathfinder Force Badge.

 

Awarded the D.F.C. in the L.G. 14th November 1944, Served as a Bomb Aimer, when recommended for the D.F.C. he had flown 218:50 hours on operations and flown 48 sorties.

 

Recommendation from C.O.:
“This Officer is a very keen and capable Bomb Aimer who has completed 48 operational sorties against such heavily-defended targets as Stuttart, Bremen, and Essen.
He has invariably displayed a keenness for operations and a high sense of devotion to duty which has been a decided factor in influencing not only the successes attained by his crew, but inspiring confidence in his other fellow comrades. Strongly recommended for the on-immediate award of the D.F.C.”

 

Alfred George Pettit was born on 18th April 1911 in 22 Harrington Street, ST Pancras, London, he died on 8th August 1963 in Middlesex Hospital.

 

He had first joined the RAF on 3rd August 1940, on 9th April 1942 he joined 142 Squadron and on 24th April 1942 took part in his first operations as Front Gunner of a Wellington Bomber.

 

on 21st June 1944 he joined 405 RCAF Squadron, 8 Group Pathfinder Force, at Gransden Lodge, Beds.

 

Of particular interest was his First Bombing Raid with 405 Squadron was Middel Straete a V1 Flying Bomb site in Northern France, he would go on to attack some very heavily defended German targets.

 

On 1st August 1944 he earned his PFF badge, soon after on 1st October 1944 he took a Bombing Leaders Course.
by 14th November 1944 he was awarded the DFC.
During 1945 from 21st March he was an Instructor at RAF Warboys.
