Description

Efficiency Medal, GVI, bar Militia, 1982659 Sapper R. Potter, Royal Engineers, who served with the BEF in France during June 1940.

R. Potter was born on 17th February 1898.

At the age of 33 he attested for service for 4 years on 3rd December 1931 with the Royal Engineers.
He was remustered as a Platelayer on 23rd March 1933.

On 3rd December 1935, he chose to extend his service and sign on for another 4 years.

By the time his contract came up for renewal again, WW2 had recently begun.

His record shows he Disembarked, British Expeditionary Force on “1/6/1940”, Which appears to indicate he was involved in the Dunkirk Evacuation, likely having been there since the BEF was sent in 1939 and the date appears to be his arrival back home in the middle of the Dunkirk evacuations.

He is then recorded as having been discharged under King’s Regulations 390 XVIII(a) for Services no Longer Required, as he was now about 45, this was usually for having “No army employment suitable to his age and medical category”.
