Egypt Medal, 1882, bar Tel-El-Kebir, 1480 Pte W. Cage, 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, a long serving veteran invalided home during the Egyptian War of 1882.

 

Contact marking and some pitting from wear alongside a Khedive’s Bronze Star.

 

Officially engraved: “1480 Pte W. Cage. 1/Gord: Highrs:”

 

William Cage was born during 1847 in Thirston, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
Once he turned 18 he attested for service with the British Army, joining the 56th Regiment of Foot at Bury St Edmunds on 13th December 1865.

 

After 1 year he transferred to the 75th Stirlingshire Regiment of Foot, on 1st January 1867.

 

By 1881, the new regiment, the Gordon Highlanders was formed and the 75th Regiment was absorbed into it.

United Kingdom: 31st March 1875 – 30th Sept 1881
Mediterranean: 1st Oct 1881 – 1st August 1882
Egypt: 2nd August 1882 – 20th Oct 1882
Home: 21st October 1882 – 3rd January 1887

 

Total Service of 21 years, 21 days.

 

He only appears to have spent 80 days in the Egypt for the war, in that short time he fought at Tel-el-Kebir with the regiment earning his medal and bar, before the medal roll remarks state he was “Invalided – at Depot, A.G. list 130, Medal issued 25th August 1883”

 

Following his return from the war he remained at home to finish of his 21 year of service being finally discharged on 3rd January 1887.
