Egypt Medal, undated reverse, George William Smith, Ship’s Cook 1st Class, HMS Humber, a 26 year veteran Cook of the Royal Navy.

 

Some usual slight pitting from wear along side a Khedive’s Star, naming officially impressed: “G. W. Smith. S. Cook. 1. CL, H.M.S. Humber.”

 

George William Smith was born on 25th August 1839 in Poplar, Middlesex.

 

He first joined the navy on 10th March 1865 on HMS Salamander as an Able Seamen.

 

His service record then begins on 1st January 1873 as an A.B. on HMS Growler.

 

Promoted to Leading Seaman on 29th October 1873 on board HMS Nassau.

 

Promoted again to Petty Officer 2nd Class on HMS Daphne, 1st June 1875.

 

Whilst on HMS Daphne he began his 16 years of being a Ships Cook, becoming the Acting Ship’s Cook on 22nd October 1875, he was promoted to Cook 2nd Class on HMS Duke of Wellington, 22nd September 1876.

 

During the Egyptian War he was present on HMS Humber, as Ship’s Cook, 1st Class, from 31st December 1882 until 1st April 1885.

 

He finished his career as Ship’s Cook at HMS Duke of Wellington having just finished 2 years on HMS Wanderer, to be shore pensions on 27th April 1891, a little over 26 years since he first joined the Navy.
