Description

Egypt Medal, undated, bar Suakin 1885, Yeoman of Stores Alexander Robertson, HMS Tyne. Later Chief Boatman in Charge, of various North of Ireland Coast Guard Stations over a 37 year career.

 

Only approximately 125 medals with the bar Suakin 1885 were awarded to HMS Tyne.

 

Born on 2nd September 1858 in Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

 

First attested for service with the Royal Navy at HMS Aurora as a Boy 1st Class on 21st April 1876.

 

Saw varied sea service through the 1870s and 1880s, the periods of the Egypt and Sudan War:

 

HMS Defence, 4th August 1881 – 30th July 1884, during this time appointed Yeoman of Stores from Able Seaman on 1st Oct 1882.
Royal Adelaide, 31st July 1884 – 15th Sept 1884
Agamemnon, 16th Sept 1884 – 12th Nov 1884
Royal Adelaide, 13th Novr 1884 – 8th Jan 1885
HMS Tyne, 9th January 1885 – 18th October 1886

 

HMS Belleisle, 19th October 1886 – 7th November 1886, a Coast Guard Ship, beginning of his long Coast Guard Service
Rerated as Boatman on 8th November 1886 at Malin Head Station, Ireland.
Moville Station, 9th November 1889 – 14th December 1893
Malin Head and Moville Station until 1st January 1895
Commissioned Boatman promotion on 1st January 1895 at Moville until 11th August 1903
Helens Bay Station from 12th August 1903
Promoted chief Boatman on North of Ireland Station, 28th February 1904
Then spent time at Skernes and Loughskerry station.
Promoted to Chief Boatman in Charge, 15th January 1907.
Also spent time at Keem and then finally Rosemoney as Chief Petty Officer until his discharge to pension on 2nd September 1913.

 

Total Service in Royal Navy, 10 Years, Service in Coast Guard, 27 years, totalling 37 years of service.
