Description

East and West Africa Medal, bar 1898, 85 Private Ogunshakin, 1st West African Frontier Force. Also took part in the Ashanti Expedition.

Officially impressed: “85 Pte Ogunshakin. 1st W.A.F. Force”

Confirmed on the medal roll, issued to him whilst stationed at Jebba.

He was also present with the same regiment in the 1900-1901 Ashanti Expedition, earning the medal without clasp at which time it was known as the “1st Northern Nigeria Regiment West African Frontier Force”.

Provenance, ex Spink Numismatic Circular circa 1991.

Scarce to unit, a founding member of the W.A.F.F. formed that year by Colonel Frederick Lugard, who had been posted over to Nigeria to raise the new force, due to to difficulties in issuing the medals locally many were left un-issued and were scrapped, as noted on the medal roll.
