General Service Medal, GVI, bar Bomb and Mine Clearance 1945-49, 1905193 Sapper G. C. Malcom, R.E., Extremely rare and confirmed on the roll.

 

G.C. Malcom served in Bomb Disposal Duties as a Lance Corporal, earning his medal with the rank of Sapper as a member of 16 Bomb Disposal Squadron.

 

46 Members of 16 Bomb Disposal Squadron are on the medal roll for receiving the bar, out of which at least 6 were awarded a British Empire Medal for the extremely hazardous job.

 

The unit was formed at Cardiff under Major Windle R.E. on 2nd October 1940. They served during the war on disposal duties in England, the 16th Company were placed in Western Command.

 

They later moved to Alderbury, near Salisbury for a while then to Hursley, near Winchester during May 1946.

 

16 Bomb Disposal Company was one of the few to not be disbaned after the end of the war, by April 1948 only 9 companies remained out of 16.

 

By August 1949, 3 more companies were disbanded, leaving only 2nd BD Company, 7th BD Company and 16th BD Company. His unit continued service at Hursley, Winchester before the limit for Bomb Disposal Personnel in the UK was set to 60 of all ranks, the final 3 units being disbanded.
