Charles was first commissioned from a Cadet to 2nd Lieutenant from 26th June 1954, joining the Royal Scots Fusiliers under Officer Service Number 435967.
He joined the Territorial Army National Service List from 12th December 1955 from the Regular Army National Service List.
Promoted to Lieutenant from 8th March 1956.
London Gazette 31st August 1962 notes:
“Infantry, Lowland Brigade, R.S.F. Territorial Army Reserve of Officers, Lt C. A. Robertson from Active List to be Lt, 3rd July 1962.
During his time in the Army, the 1st Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers were posted for active service in Malaya, during the Malayan Emergency between 1954-1957.
